Switchable Molecular Materials for Information and Communication Technologies - SMICTS
Interest in switchable molecular materials, possessing properties relevant for practical applications, is growing fast, mainly spurred y on by the development of information and communication technologies. While the current miniaturization (top-down) approach based on silicon technology forces solid-state physicists and electronics engineers to manipulate matter at ever smaller scales, it is progressively being appreciated that molecule-based devices inherently offer sensitivity and levels of selectivity that cannot be reached with conventinal solid-state materials, and that these properties may be directly applicable in molecular electronics, data storage, display devices and chemical sensors. Molecular-scaled components are thus increasingly seen as the ultimate miniaturization of future working devices.
